HARYANA TRADITION
1. Folk Arts & Entertainment
Saang (Swang): This is the soul of Haryanvi folk theatre. It’s an open-air performance involving singing, acting, and dancing. It’s traditionally performed by men (who often play female roles) and focuses on moral or historical stories.
Ragini: These are the traditional folk songs. They are incredibly powerful and often tell stories of heroism, romance, or social commentary.
2. Traditional Attire
The clothing is practical yet colorful, designed for an agricultural lifestyle:
For Men: The classic white Dhoti, Kurta, and a Pagri (turban). The Pagri isn't just a hat—it's a symbol of honor and pride.
For Women: The Daman (a heavy, flared skirt), Kurti (shirt), and Odhni (veil). The Daman is famous for being incredibly heavy and using meters of cloth!
3. The Food (The "Diet of Champions")
Haryanvi food is simple, fresh, and heavy on dairy:
Bajre ki Khichdi: A staple during winters.
Kachri ki Sabzi: Made from wild cucumbers.
Hara Dhania Cholia: Green chickpeas with spices.
Dairy: No meal is complete without a massive dollop of white butter (makkhan) and a glass of Lassi or Thandai.
4. Famous Dances
Phag Dance: Performed by farmers during the month of Phalgun (near Holi).
Dhamal Dance: A high-energy dance performed by men, usually during the harvest season.
Ghoomar: Though often associated with Rajasthan, it is also very popular in the regions of Haryana bordering Rajasthan.
5. Social Traditions
Hukka: In Haryanvi villages, the Hukka isn't just for smoking; it’s a social bond. People sit together at the Chaupal (village meeting place) to discuss everything from local politics to family matters.
Sports: Wrestling (Kushti) is more than a sport here; it's a way of life that has produced world-class champions.
